Hollow tine aerators are suitable for smaller lawns and for gardeners who don’t shy away from a small amount of manual work to keep their lawn in top shape. The basic construction of a hollow tine aerator, such as the Yard Butler D-6C, is similar to a garden fork (which can be thought of as a solid tine aerator!!), with several hollow prongs on a foot rest that the gardener pushes into the soil to remove a small plug or core of soil allowing air, moisture and nutrients to penetrate more easily to the grass roots.
Variations on the design include an a more user, and back, friendly Step ‘N Tilt design which uses the users weight more effectively and comes with a handy tray to catch the soil cores. Whilst technically not a hollow tine aerator, there are several solid tine aerators aerators on the market that are similar to garden forks but with longer handles to protect your back such as the Yard Butler M-7C.
